It took 10 long years for the truth to come out…
Most people remember Paul Walker as the pretty boy from The Fast and the Furious series, but it wasn’t until after his passing that the public started to learn his heart was way more beautiful than people realized. Paul made it a point to keep his acts of kindness hidden. For him, it was always about helping and never about publicity. Now that he’s passed, all of these stories are coming to light, stories like this one…
Kristen and Kyle Upham had just gotten married and were ring shopping. Kyle kept encouraging Kristen to go bigger, but Kristen knew they didn’t have the money.
“I noticed there was someone else in (the store) but didn’t give it much thought, and we started looking at rings,” Kristen said. “(Kyle) kept wanting me to go bigger, and I kept saying, ‘No look at the prices.'”
There was one other customer in the store who Kyle decided to strike up a conversation with. “We exchanged names and talked about what each of us did,” Kyle said in an interview. When Paul heard that Kyle just got back from serving in Iraq he was visibly moved. After the couple left the store, the movie star paid for their ring and told the cashier to call them back to the store to give it to them, but don’t tell them it was him who bought it.
The jewelry store did just that. The couple couldn’t believe that a stranger had just spent $9,000 to buy their ring and until his passing, didn’t know it was Paul.
“One of the ladies came out holding a bag and just simply said, ‘Here’s your ring.’ I think both of our mouths dropped,” she said. “It’s still to this day the most generous thing anyone has ever done for me,” Kristen Upham told CBS in Richmond, Va.
“I think after a couple of minutes of shell shock it finally sunk in and we were like, ‘Well how, who bought it?'” she said. “She just smiled at me and said it was better not to say.”
Ten years later they finally get their answer. After Paul’s passing, the cashier from the jewelry store shared that special moment with the public.
“He called the manager over and said, ‘The ring that those people were looking at, put it on my tab,'” the store clerk said in an interview.
There were no pictures together, the story didn’t go viral on social media, there was no mention of Paul’s act anywhere. In fact, people didn’t even believe Kyle when he told them they’d met Paul Walker until the store came out with the story. That’s who Paul was, a guy who wanted to help and who did it with humility.
So many stories have come out similar to this one, stories showcasing Paul’s heart and humility. He spent his spare time with a disaster relief agency, traveling the world bringing medical supplies, food and hope to impoverished countries just after disasters.
